1 dead, 1 injured following house fire in Elyria
ELYRIA, Ohio (WOIO) - One person died and another was injured following a Sunday morning house fire in Elyria.
Officials with the Elyria Fire Department confirmed the April 9 fire started at 8:05 a.m. in the 200 block of Gates Avenue.
One neighbor says she heard faint screams, and initially thought it was just kids outside, but then she looked out of her window and saw the home across the street on fire.
Officials confirmed one person in the house died as a result of the blaze after being found on the second floor of the home.
Another man was taken to University Hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Elyria Fire Chief Joseph Pronesti told 19 News the fire was intense when they arrived.
“We rescued the invalid and we then launched a pretty aggressive search and fire attack on the inside to search for the victims,” Pronesti said. “Unfortunately, we found one male deceased on the second floor. Unfortunately in the city in the last two years we’ve had six fatal fires. But, in each one it leaves a mark especially on the holiday of Easter.”
The victims have not been identified.
Fire officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire, but have called in the State Fire Marshal to investigate the cause.
Officials ordered an emergency demolition on the home due to fear of the structure collapsing following the blaze.
