5/31/2023 UPDATE: US Marshals capture escaped Summit County inmate after he stops at McDonald’s
SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - Summit County Sheriff deputies are looking for a male prisoner who escaped from custody Tuesday morning.
The prisoner, 39-year-old Jason Lyle Conrad, was on his way to a doctor’s appointment around 8 a.m. at Summa Health at 1 Park West Drive in Akron.
Summit County Sheriff’s deputies said Conrad was handcuffed and in a medical boot for a previous injury.
While the deputy was removing Conrad from the transport vehicle, deputies said he was able to escape and run away after removing the boot.
Akron police, Fairlawn, and Copley police officers, along with Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, are assisting with the search.
The U.S. Marshals office took over the search efforts on Tuesday afternoon.
“We don’t have reason to believe that he’s armed right now but he’s a fugitive and he’s on the run and he’s probably desperate,” said Anne Murphy, Assistant Chief with the U.S. Marshals Service.
The U.S. Marshals office is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to Conrad’s arrest.
“We still have deputies and task force officers in the area looking for him and will continue to do that through the evening tomorrow the next day the day after that whatever needs to happen until we bring him into custody,” Murphy said.
Conrad is in jail on charges of fleeing, possession of drugs, trafficking in drugs, and a parole violation.
“My suggestion would be not to approach him to call law enforcement, 911 and tell them what we have or you can call our tip line which is 1-866-4 WANTED,” Murphy said.
Murphy warned any friends or family of Conrad not to help him or they’ll be breaking the law too. She also had a warning for people who live in the area.
“Ensure your cars are locked, ensure your doors are locked, if you see anything suspicious call your local law enforcement have them check it out. If you have outbuildings on your property in that area, make sure that they’re locked and have law enforcement check that for you in that area so he doesn’t have an opportunity to hide somewhere, steal a vehicle get farther away, or anything like that.”
He is a white male, 5′9″ and 150 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He has several distinctive tattoos.
Marshals said he has ditched his orange jump suit and was last seen wearing a white shirt, blue shorts, and walking with a limp.
Anyone with information is asked to call (330) 643-2181.
